Start of School

My sister told me that every parents and every child has to go through the agony, pain and tears of sending their child to school on their first day of school.

My husband and I decided to enroll Kris on a full day playgroup program after she turns 2. This seem like a reasonable age right. We decided that Dec would be a good period since it's year end. There should be quite a few events happening in school that will make her slightly happier and forget her sorrow of "school alone".

2 weeks before the term starts, the parents, us started to get cold feet and wonder whether it's too soon for Kris to start school. Thousands of thoughts ran through our mind. Will she have enough to eat? will she sleep well? Will she be able to get used to school routine?

The dreadful day came and we accompanied Kris on her first day of school. The school only allowed us to stay with her till breakfast hours. Oh gosh, I thought to myself! When Kris saw us leaving after breakfast, she burst out in tears and started to bawl. I was heartbroken.

We fetched her by noon and she burst into tears immediately upon seeing us and need coaxing to pacify her. My little baby.

These ritual went on for a few days and we decided to extend her school hours each day and finally by day 5, she seem to be coping well with full day.

Take away
Do not fear. I think as parents we fear too much whether they will cope well in school and whether they will adapt. Too much fear prevent us from progressing.

Independent. Everyone regardless of age needs to learn how to be independent in different ways. For Kris, her first step is to wean slightly away from mama and papa.

Relax. A little bawling is fine. Do not think that the child is not ready for school. Do leave immediately even though the little one is bawling. The longer you drag your feed, the longer the tears will flow.

Extend school hours gradually. Do not let the child fear school. Increase her school hours bit by bit.

Call the school. If you are worry about the child progress in school, call during rest time to inquire more.

Talk to the child. Ask the child how was school and how well she has been in school. Encouragement is what everyone need.

First Dental check

It went on for several days where Kris pointed to her month and complained. I'm 100% sure it's not another episode of HFMD and decides to bring her for her first dental check at age 2.

To prepare her for her first dental appointment, I started reading to her daily on a book titled "What to expect when you visit the dentist" and being very descriptive and imaginative with pretend play on what she should or should not be doing when visiting the dentist. This got her all excited over her first visit.

Verdict
She was applauded by the dentist for her full cooperative and obedience.

When she entered the room, she was greeted by the dentist who blew her a "glove balloon". This somehow lighten the mood between the stranger and her.

When the dentist told her to open her mouth wide, she open with an Ahhh immediately.

First checkup is completed in less than 10 minutes as actually washing and polishing of teeth only begins when she turns 4 years old.

She exited the room telling me that the experience was not painful.

And finally, she is not suffering from HFMD but instead its her last 2 molars that are causing her great discomfort.
