After many day of being un-infected, Kris contracted her first episode of Hand Foot Mouth Disease from her cousin. Urghh.
Discovery
She pointed to her mouth at random times and tell us "PAIN, PAIN". I brushed that aside, attributing to the fall that she suffered earlier.
I noticed red rash at her buttock area
She refused her pre-sleep warm milk
She woke up numerous times during the night
All these seem to signals that rings HFMD. I took her to the doctor the very next day and confirmed my suspicions.
Verdict
I heard and read so much about HFMD that I thought my doom day is coming. The doctor warned me about kids who neither eat nor drink and ended in hospital for drips due to dehydration.
He told me to give the kid whatever food or drink that she wants, being cold drinks or ice cream as HFMD is 'special'.
I prepared myself for the worst and stocked up the refrigerator with cold milk, yogurt, fruits, cheese, vanilla ice-cream. I expected her to be ultra fragile and teary as normally she screams at the slightest pain and get all teary easily.
Day 1
She had a few ulcers located at the back of her mouth and throat, slight fever which lasted for a day and buttock rash. She turned down all her usual food and munched on ice-cream, cold milk and water for the entire day. Other then the occasional tantrums, she is otherwise on good behavior.
Day 2- Day 3
Other then the symptoms in Day 1, spots are also found at the sole of her feet and tights. Fever is gone. Her appetite is slightly better. Adding more food items to her list includes pokka sticks, porridge, boiled carrot sticks. Behavior wise, she is however very grouchy needing constant companionship and attention. She woke up numerous time in the night tearfully, pointing to her mouth and telling us that she is in pain. We are both sleep deprived.
Day 4
We are on the road to recovery. Her regular warm milk seem to have made a comeback and so does the usual rice for lunch and dinner. Grouchy level decreases and laughter level increases.
Yeah, I said to myself.
Day 5
We are back! She bounced back overnight. Now, its time to help her quit cold milk and popsicles.
Sadly, papa contracted HFMD this time round. Epidemic, I screamed.
INDULGENCE is the word that i have used to help her ride over this period. Also, do think of activities that can keep the kid distracted.
As parents, do get regular rest as you cannot afford to be down during this time.
