Drawing
Nowadays, writing and drawing has become more abstract. Kris started doodling.
M: What are you doing?
K: I'm writing. Don't disturb me ah.
M: What are you writing?
K: Im writing Uncle R, mama and papa name
I went to take a peep and this is what I saw. Kris went on for 5 minutes explaining her doodling to me.

Start of School
My sister told me that every parents and every child has to go through the agony, pain and tears of sending their child to school on their first day of school.
My husband and I decided to enroll Kris on a full day playgroup program after she turns 2. This seem like a reasonable age right. We decided that Dec would be a good period since it's year end. There should be quite a few events happening in school that will make her slightly happier and forget her sorrow of "school alone".
2 weeks before the term starts, the parents, us started to get cold feet and wonder whether it's too soon for Kris to start school. Thousands of thoughts ran through our mind. Will she have enough to eat? will she sleep well? Will she be able to get used to school routine?
The dreadful day came and we accompanied Kris on her first day of school. The school only allowed us to stay with her till breakfast hours. Oh gosh, I thought to myself! When Kris saw us leaving after breakfast, she burst out in tears and started to bawl. I was heartbroken.
We fetched her by noon and she burst into tears immediately upon seeing us and need coaxing to pacify her. My little baby.
These ritual went on for a few days and we decided to extend her school hours each day and finally by day 5, she seem to be coping well with full day.
Take away
Do not fear. I think as parents we fear too much whether they will cope well in school and whether they will adapt. Too much fear prevent us from progressing.
Independent. Everyone regardless of age needs to learn how to be independent in different ways. For Kris, her first step is to wean slightly away from mama and papa.
Relax. A little bawling is fine. Do not think that the child is not ready for school. Do leave immediately even though the little one is bawling. The longer you drag your feed, the longer the tears will flow.
Extend school hours gradually. Do not let the child fear school. Increase her school hours bit by bit.
Call the school. If you are worry about the child progress in school, call during rest time to inquire more.
Talk to the child. Ask the child how was school and how well she has been in school. Encouragement is what everyone need.

First Dental check
It went on for several days where Kris pointed to her month and complained. I'm 100% sure it's not another episode of HFMD and decides to bring her for her first dental check at age 2.
To prepare her for her first dental appointment, I started reading to her daily on a book titled "What to expect when you visit the dentist" and being very descriptive and imaginative with pretend play on what she should or should not be doing when visiting the dentist. This got her all excited over her first visit.
Verdict
She was applauded by the dentist for her full cooperative and obedience.
When she entered the room, she was greeted by the dentist who blew her a "glove balloon". This somehow lighten the mood between the stranger and her.
When the dentist told her to open her mouth wide, she open with an Ahhh immediately.
First checkup is completed in less than 10 minutes as actually washing and polishing of teeth only begins when she turns 4 years old.
She exited the room telling me that the experience was not painful.
And finally, she is not suffering from HFMD but instead its her last 2 molars that are causing her great discomfort.

Song: Sandcastle
Kris's learnt a new song in class and it became her favorite song for the month. It's rather catchy, I would say.
Sandcastlc sandcastle made it out of sand
Sandcastle sandcastle made it out of sand
The waves will wash it all away
I'll build it up again
She enjoyed stacking up those paper cups and waiting for the right moment to send them flying away. At first with her hands, then with her legs. Soon, it became a bedtime routine to send those cups flying. The act always send her giggling.

Happy 2nd Birthday Blast Part 2
I'm ashamed to say that this is the first time that we bought Kris to Singapore Zoo. Well, it's better to be late then never I told my husband.
I'm thankful for a clear blue sky despite the hazy season. The zoo has a birthday promotion for every Singapore and permanent residents which equate to free admission, 10% off retail and F&B and complimentary ice cream. Do remember to purchase your tickets on the internet to enjoy more savings.
Verdict
The F&B section definitely needs some work. There were so few food selection. I selected the fish ball noodle which was a terrible choice. It cost $7.50 and tasted horrible. The fishballs are completed made from pure flour. There wasn't much fast food choices either. There is only 1 KFC located in kidzworld zone.
Kris entered the Australian zone happily thinking that she could be able to feed wild kangaroos or wallabies. We didn't sight any kangaroos nor wallabies and we are definitely not allowed to feed them. Kris exit the enclosure asking where are the animals.
The polar bear zone was a big hit with Kris, watching the bear swim in his enclosure. We were luckily enough to visit during the bear feeding time. Kris exclaimed that the bear eats a lot and need to cut its nails as the bear was spotted with extremely long nails.
Kris had so much fun crawling in and out of the man-made igloo in the polar bear exhibit.
The elephants of Asia is a big hit. The viewing gallery was completely packed on a weekday. The elephants were well trained and performed at least 5 tricks. Kris was completely mesmerized by them. Occasionally, I caught her laughing and giggling at their tricks.
She was snoring away by the time we reaches kidzworld. My husband and I took a mini cheese fries break while waiting for her to wake up. It was raining by the time she woke up and thus no water playground this time round. Instead, we were off to feed the goats.
It's impossible to cover the entire exhibits in one day and we promised to bring Kris to the zoo again.
Nowadays, she often remind us about our next visit and what are the must visit animals.

Peppe Pig Dough Set
Her first dough set.
My husband, A had been rather discouraging whenever I bring up the idea of Kris playing with dough as he thinks the dough will end up being in her mouth. Kris saw this adorable Peppa Pig set at the mall and pleaded with her father to buy this. Finally, daddy gave in and Kris carried the set to the cashier and stood there ensuring that the set was paid for and packed for home.
The dough cost S$26 after a 25% off rack discount. There are 4 tubs of dough (in blue, green, pink and yellow colours), a A3 rollable mat, some tools for molding. All these are placed in a nice pink and blue tool box, compact enough to bring anywhere and big enough for Kris to sweep all her dough making tools back after each session.
Comparing this dough with Play Doh, the texture feels moister, softer and smells nicer (with fruity smell). The plastic fruit molds are sturdy too. Kris had an amazing one hour session kneading, rolling, twisting and molding the dough. She was fascinated how "green" noodles were produced.
After 1 hour of play, we found some bit size dough on her hair, legs and clothes. Its time for a bath!

2nd Mid Autumn Festive
This is Kris's 2nd Mid Autumn festival and we decided to reward her to one of our Chinese traditional treat "Piglet in a basket"猪仔饼. Upon first bite, she fell in love with this little piglet from 大ä¸å›½é¥¼å®¶æœˆé¥¼.
One of these mini piglets cost S$1.20 and were wrapped and nicely packed in either a brightly color red or pink basket. I'm not a fan of biscuits but I would say that the taste of these piglets are fantastic. It wasn't too sweet nor oily and left a very fragrant after taste after each bite. No wonder Kris requested for a second piglet when she finished her first.
We celebrated the day with her cousins and a walk down the vicinity with her KOALA BEAR lantern.

Ki-mono
I came across this beautiful furniture shop, Kimono while browsing at THE STAR. The shop are fitted with modern day Japanese wooden furniture ranging from chairs to bed frame. Most of the designs are stylish, compact and some are rather creative, just the right size for many of us now.
They also have a section allocated for children furniture ranging from mini ladders to bunk beds. I bought a clothes stand with a bear topper for Kris at S$50.00.
Initially, I was hesitated as it require self assembly time and I thought to myself "Oh gosh, I need to bring out my most beloved super automatic screw driver." To my surprise, the pieces are self - assembly with screws meaning that all I need to do is to twist and tighten the knots. The instructions provided were clear with many illustration. I managed to complete the clothes stands in less than 15 minutes. That was a piece of cake and I did not utilize my automatic screw driver.

Symptoms of Haze
Can haze cause illness? I guess so. All my family members are either down with watery eyes or bad cough. The same goes for Kris who becomes very grouchy due to the weather and refuse to sleep and eat during the day.
Shoo Shoo away you go haze.
Wind.. please blow the other direction.
We need to travel.

Haze
With the weather in Singapore getting worst during the last few weeks due to the constant burning of oil plantation in Indonesia.
We drank lots of herbal tea and constantly on the air purifier to "cleanse" the air. Kris looks at the air purifier as if she found a new toy.

Pho Quoc
We decided on Vietnam as the destination for our 4D3N family trip and booked Shell Resort as recommended by our cousin-in-law.
Verdict
Our direct flight with Vietnam airline was cancelled 2 days prior to our department and we have to enroute through Ho Chi Minh Airport which made the duration of travel extend from 2 hours to 7 hours. Totally urghhh. Kris was already fast asleep by the time we reached the resort.
Accommodations are mored suited for couples without children. We were welcomed by a team of friendly staff upon our arrival. The reception areas looks clean and vast with its open concept idea. Our room are suited on level 2. Do note that there are no lift available here. We were welcomed by a spacious marbled bath tub the instant we opened the doors to our room.
The wet bath and WC are separated from one another being at opposite ends of the room.
There is a step down from the bathing area / kitchen area to the sleeping area.
The edge of the shelves, bath tubs, steps, tables, bed frame are all squared corners. My nephew got his first bruise when jumping on the bed and knocked against the edge of the wooden bed frame. Ouch! Kris had her first fall when she missed the step from the bathing area down to the sleeping area.
The bathroom tiles are NOT made of anti-slip materials, Kris slipped while showering one day as well.
The bedside switches are located near the floor, Kris had a busy time clicking away.
The pool area is fantastic. It was spacious and almost empty most of the day. There is a shallow and deeper area. Kris and her cousin are able to venture the shallow area by themselves (Of course with adult supervision).
The beach is located next to the pool which made it ultra convenient to venture from one area to the another.
There is only one restaurant in the resort. The breakfast spread is fantastic with a wide array of choices. Overall, I would give the restaurant 4/5. The food is fantastic, the staff are friendly and the area is clean with live band each night. Kris and her many cousins danced to the rhythm of the music.
The weather was horrifingly hot. The sun was scorcing our skin and unknowingly, many of us got sun burnt during the late morning swim.
We hired a driver on 2 occasion, one is to the night market and dinner place (650,000 dong), the other is for 4 hours of free and easy drive around (850,000 dong).
The night market was a disappointment. It was a small area filled with street food and local products. We completed the walk in less than 30 mins. We chose to visit honey farm, peppercorn farm and pagoda among the many touristy areas. After 4 hours, we were all screaming to go back and rest. The heat is killing us.
We agreed to pick a cooler place next year.

Looking Back
As I watched Kris walked out from our house towards the lift lobby, she stood on her toes and press the down button. It seem only yesterday that I told her that she needs to grow taller to reach the down button. Kids are growing up too fast, I told my husband.
Favourite songs for now
These are Kris's favourite songs for now and she insisted on us singing or replaying the songs everyday.
It's amazing when she could actually sing out the entire song.
Body parts
Do is for toes
Re is for knees
Mi is for tummy
Fa is for heart
Sol is for shoulders
La is for face
Ti is for head

HFMD
After many day of being un-infected, Kris contracted her first episode of Hand Foot Mouth Disease from her cousin. Urghh.
Discovery
She pointed to her mouth at random times and tell us "PAIN, PAIN". I brushed that aside, attributing to the fall that she suffered earlier.
I noticed red rash at her buttock area
She refused her pre-sleep warm milk
She woke up numerous times during the night
All these seem to signals that rings HFMD. I took her to the doctor the very next day and confirmed my suspicions.
Verdict
I heard and read so much about HFMD that I thought my doom day is coming. The doctor warned me about kids who neither eat nor drink and ended in hospital for drips due to dehydration.
He told me to give the kid whatever food or drink that she wants, being cold drinks or ice cream as HFMD is 'special'.
I prepared myself for the worst and stocked up the refrigerator with cold milk, yogurt, fruits, cheese, vanilla ice-cream. I expected her to be ultra fragile and teary as normally she screams at the slightest pain and get all teary easily.
Day 1
She had a few ulcers located at the back of her mouth and throat, slight fever which lasted for a day and buttock rash. She turned down all her usual food and munched on ice-cream, cold milk and water for the entire day. Other then the occasional tantrums, she is otherwise on good behavior.
Day 2- Day 3
Other then the symptoms in Day 1, spots are also found at the sole of her feet and tights. Fever is gone. Her appetite is slightly better. Adding more food items to her list includes pokka sticks, porridge, boiled carrot sticks. Behavior wise, she is however very grouchy needing constant companionship and attention. She woke up numerous time in the night tearfully, pointing to her mouth and telling us that she is in pain. We are both sleep deprived.
Day 4
We are on the road to recovery. Her regular warm milk seem to have made a comeback and so does the usual rice for lunch and dinner. Grouchy level decreases and laughter level increases.
Yeah, I said to myself.
Day 5
We are back! She bounced back overnight. Now, its time to help her quit cold milk and popsicles.
Sadly, papa contracted HFMD this time round. Epidemic, I screamed.
INDULGENCE is the word that i have used to help her ride over this period. Also, do think of activities that can keep the kid distracted.
As parents, do get regular rest as you cannot afford to be down during this time.

First Singlish word
Kris surprised me one day when I asked her a question and she responded with a "YA". I was shocked and further asked if she knows the meaning of YA and she say YES. I tried correcting her in using YES instead and I end up committing the same mistake and responding with YA when Kris asked me a question. Oh my!!!
The next few days, she carried on using YA in our daily communication. One day, my niece responded and told us YA means coconut in Hokkien dialect.
Today, I made a conscious effort in correcting her and it tickles her to see me frown and smile when she says YA or YES. Haha

Eye Screen at Cordlife Mount Elizabeth (Novena)
According to Health Promotion Board, about 16% of preschool children are short-sighted. The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends a child to have his/her first vision screening between the age of 6 - 12 months even if no eye problem is apparent.
We decided to sign Kris up for her first eye screen at Cordlife. It was a non invasive process.
The optometrist takes a gun like machine who reflects low level of infrared light and have Kris looked into the machine where picture of her eyes were snapped. Next, the optometrist uses other gadgets (emits lights and sounds) to gain Kris attention to test for eye movement.
Verdict
The examination takes no more than 10 minutes and the optometrist is able to analyse common eye problems such as strabismus (crossed eyes), Amblyopia (lazy eye), Myopia (Short sightedness), Hyeropia (Long sightedness), Astigmatism.
Results are instantly delivered by the optometrist and explained.
At the end of the screening, a detailed report will be generated for your reference.
Kris was cooperative throughout the examination, quietly sitting on my lap and listing to the instructions of the optometrist.
The place was ultra children friendly with numerous discussion tables around, a big TV, lots of children toys and activities to keep the kids entertained. Coffee, teas and snacks to keep adults hydrated as well.
Area of improvement
A reference/appendix book should be provided on the normal or abnormal reading with glossory on the terms of the tests so that they can be referenced on in the future.
This should only be introduce to children which are over 20 months as they need to follow certain instruction (eg: look in a certain direction, keep their eyes open or with the help of the parent to lift their eyelids.)

Fishing at home!
This gives me some ideas for Kris to embrace at home after visiting a pre-school open house program. Fishing!
I bought some plastic water-proof sea creature ($1.60, from the local provision shop), a fishing net ($2.00 from Daiso), recycled some bottled milk caps and re-use her long over due bathing tub.
There you go, our home made "pond" together with her favorite kettle.

Mummy and Daddy knows best
As Kris starts to pick up more vocabulary, we are often caught in a time or understanding wrestle.
Good bye used to be just bye bye, sweetie, 5 sec tops. Now, Kris needs to say good bye to all her animal sticker friends before alighting the car.
Since she pick up words, ONE to TWO to FOUR words sentences, my husband and I let out our relief as we do not need to guess what does she wants when she starts crying. We thought that our lives are getting simple, no more guessing games. That is what we thought until she starts babbling some words which we totally do not understand and started blankly at her or tried to guess what is she trying to say. Sometimes, this can led to frustration at her end and she will stomped her legs or kept repeating louder and louder what she needs/wants. Over time, we learnt her language and are able to de-code what she is saying.
CORN means she wants to eat cornflakes, Tle means kettle, Go mean the song "Let it GO" and the list of codes continue.
Her NO seem pretty clear and sure though.

Terrible 2s
You often hear about Terrible 2s Horrible 3s and I often wonder how terrible can 2s be. Now that Kris is approaching the mile stone,my fear are coming REAL SOON.
Temper Tantrums
When my husband or myself chided Kris for her misbehave or our refusal to allow her to do certain things, she directed her anger by crossing her arms across her body, throwing things on the floor, biting the nearest toy available to her or the most convenient for all kids CRY OUT LOUD.
Often, I carried her to a corner of the house and sat down beside her so that she can looked me in my eyes. I made her stood there crying while telling her what wrong she has done. This often escalate a volume up in the whine or movement towards me asking me to hug her. I had to repeatedly tell her to stop crying before I carry her. Before long, she realizes that I'm not going to give in until she stops.
Independence
As she grow bigger, she wanted to do certain acts by herself such as eating, combing her hair or even refusing to sit in the stroller when we are out. Even though she often make a mess at the dinning table, my husband and I allowed her to feed herself and gradually guided her towards the right way. This can be frustrating at time but we look on the bright side.
Affectionate
As Kris grows, she has became very affectionate. She likes to sit on our lap while watching tv, cuddle us when she wakes up from her naps, wanting us to play with her ALWAYS.While this can slow us down a little, my husband and I are positive that this definitely worth our time.
Taking charge
I started to let Kris decides what she want to eat or wear. I learnt that i should only ask her closed ended question and avoid open-ended questions as this might cause frustration.
Sweetie, Pink or Blue. Short and simple question.

Molars
Kris's molars are hurting her so much. I thought the stage of worst teething is over but to my horror Kris started pointing and yanking her lips and telling us pain. I spent some time googling and it's the SECOND molars, the most hateful and painful phase.
The only plus point this time round is that she is able to tell us when she is in pain, bad stomach or simple no appetite.
Here's a list of teething symptoms:

Here's a list of teething symptoms:
- Drooling
- Irritability
- A tooth visible below the gum
- Swollen, bulging gums
- Trying to bite, chew, and suck on everything she can get her hands on
- Rubbing her face
- Difficulty sleeping
- Turning away food
- Bad stomach (resulted in really pungent stools)
- Fever
- No appetite
- Grabbing her ears
A to Z
We were thrilled when Kris is able to memorized at least 80% of the characters in the alphabet book of A - Z.
Our efforts of daily reading and repeating the alphabet book paid off.
Well Done sweetie.
Hand made washable alphabet book. Raw material bought from Sweet Desire. Hand made products are not that difficult :)

The Animal Resort
This place is filled with wonders! We were shocked or rather surprised to find the place filled with kids and parents. I'm feeling positive about this place and I'm right.
Kris had a wonderful time feeding all the animals and refused to go home after 2 hours.
Verdict
The animal food were relatively cheap at $2.00 per 3 packs which you could choose from a variety of horse feed, birds feed, rabbits & guinea pig feed, all animal excluding horse feed and fish feed. We decided to grab horse feed, all animal excluding horse feed and rabbits & guinea pig feed.
1st stop: We stopped by the horse barn. There is only one over fed horse which is constantly being fed. Kris was afraid as the horse opened its mouth to grab a piece of carrot. She clinged on to daddy but still wants to go ahead to feed the horse.
2nd stop: The pond. The pond is cloudy with algae and debris. We couldn't locate any fishes but decides to throw some food into the pond. Once we threw the food in the pond, the fishes quickly swam to the surface to gobble up the food. Kris pulled us away as the ducks and birds caught her attention.
3nd stop: As we walked around the place, free roaming ducks and birds greeted us as we threw the animal food on the ground. The ducks and birds were soon following us to gobble up the food. Kris hid behind her daddy for protection as the birds became more aggressive.
4th stop: To the rabbit and guinea pig enclosure. The rabbits are indivdual caged and there were numerous pieces of carrots and rabbit feed laying around. Obviously, the animals are over fed here! Kris offered the rabbit a piece of carrot and waited for a long time before the rabbit nibbled on the carrot tip and she dropped the carrot immediately. She looked at me and requested for another piece of carrot.
5th stop: Off to the peacock enclosure. Do note the holes on the cage where tiny hands are able to fit in. Kris inserted her hands into the cage to greet the peacocks. We had to pull her out and told her not to do that as the animals may get aggresive and decides to nibble on her instead. She looked at us in dismay.
6th stop: Last but not least, there is a "Tuck Shop" where cold drink and some hot snacks are sold. There are also coin deposits rides available for the kids which ranged from 20 cents to 50 cents. This is so cheap. I could never find a 20 cent ride anywhere else in Singapore. Kris had her animal rides where we had our cold drinks to end the tour.
There is also a small washing area for cleaning after feeding the animals.
Carpark is free as well!

KidsSTOP
We decided to stop by KidsSTOP on a Sunday afternoon. The first impression that I have is WOW!!! The place is bursting with children yelling, running and most of all laughing. My niece, K and Kris had an amazing time and refused to leave after 3 hours. We literally had to drag them out of the center.
Verdict
Remember to bring your own socks.
The entrance fee is pretty economical at $10/child (18 mths - 8 years old), $5/adult or senior citizen. This rate applies to weekends and public holidays. Weekdays rates is almost half.
Do note the operating hours.
This place is really educating the kids through play. Learning can be really fun. The place is divided into 4 main categories (Imagine, experience, discover and dream) totally 24 stops and each child can choose how long they want to stay at one stop.
There is a mini slide located near the Smaller World stop and Kris couldn't stop climbing up the steps and sliding down while my niece have a busy time "re-arranging" the plot of mushrooms.
The Supermarket is a hit for all children. The girls had a amazing time being shoppers, cashiers and cook. They spent the longest time in this stop and refuse to leave. The downside to this area is that there are too little shopping cart and kids are fighting over the scare shopping cart.
The Rain Cloud is a hit with the girls as they weather through the "rain" to the other side of the land to find mummy waiting for them. The girls really like this "Peep a boo" area where surprises awaits at the other end.
The Virtual Pond is also interesting as it's reflect a digital image of a pond with lilies, frog, fishes. Kris had a busy time trying to catch the fishes, laying in the pond and chasing after butterflies.
The Big Dream Climber had numerous huge pieces of lego for kids to build their dream home or car. The girls grown tired of this area after 5 minutes as they were more interested in being singers.
Off we go to our next stop at the Kiddie Theatre where the girls has an amazing time putting on the party gear, singing and dancing along to familar nursery rhymes.
Do take care of young kids at Math Stop as there were many green beans scattered all around (Tables, floor, etc). I quickly ushed the girls out of this room for fear of them picking up the beans and eating them! Kris has a record of putting everything into her mouth!
Do take care of young kids as the older kids tend to be overly excited at times. Kris had a yelling session with one of the older boys at the Supermarket stop.

Painting
Let's introduce some paints to Kris. I started with GALT non toxic finger paints. Fingers paints are thicker than normal paints and are suitable as an introduction to young kids.
Kris looked with enthusiastic as I poured the different color of paints on a plate. I passed her a brush and roller brush. She hesitated and decided to dip the brush into the red paint. Next she lifted her brush and decide to dot the paper. This got her started and soon she was doing it so much faster and with fun. The roller brush is abandoned after a while as she does not know how to control the rolling mechanism.
Soon, she had paint on her face, clothes and on our sofa! Luckily, this kind of paint is easily washable.
